Bike Rental Apps in Lisbon

Perhaps you are only in Lisbon for a short period and buying a bike is not an option for you. Fortunately, there are several bike rental apps available in Lisbon to ensure you have a biking experience that goes smoothly as possible. The following apps will allow you to easily find and rent bikes at your convenience and explore the hidden treasures of this beautiful city. One question you might have is if you should rent a regular or an electric bike. Regular bikes are suitable for relatively flat areas of the city, such as along the waterfront or through some neighborhoods. However, if you plan to tackle steeper inclines, such as reaching the castle or exploring hilly regions, an electric bike might be a more convenient option. Electric bikes provide motorized assistance, making uphill rides more manageable and enjoyable, and since Lisbon is a city full of hills, they might be a good option!

Gira

Launched in 2018, Gira has quickly become one of the main rental apps in Lisbon, and it’s highly likely you will constantly come across a Gira bike in Lisbon. There are several docking stations spread throughout the city with Gira bikes. Through their app, you can see nearby stations with available bikes, reserve them in advance, and unlock them using a QR code. They offer regular and electric bikes, and they have different pricing schemes. The annual pass costs 25 euros, the monthly pass costs 15 euros and the daily pass costs 2 euros. All these passes include 45-minute rides with a cost of 0,10€ for regular bikes and 0,20€ for electric bikes. Keep in mind that with longer rides, you will incur higher costs.

Lime

Another popular app to help you explore Lisbon by bike, is Lime, which is owned by Uber. The main advantage of using Lime, is that you don't have to find a docking station, as the bikes can be found in any corner. They offer electric bikes exclusively. The prices usually change so it’s recommended you download the app and check the price per minute. While Lime bikes do not fall into the category of e-mountain bikes designed for rugged terrains, they are suitable for urban exploration and can handle moderate inclines.

Hive

The third bike app we recommend is Hive. They also operate with the docking station system like Gera. However, they offer exclusively electric bikes, and have a more limited presence throughout the city. To check the prices, you should download the app. If you're specifically interested in electric bikes, to help fight against those dreaded hills, Hive can be an interesting option to consider.

Note: Before using any rental company, make sure to familiarize yourself with the different pricing schemes and regulations. Additionally, always prioritize your safety with the use of a helmet and riding at a safe velocity.

Biking Bliss: Gorgeous Lisbon Cycling Routes

After being informed about the different ways you can rent a bike, it’s time for you to learn the routes that will make you fall in love with the city. As you embark on these biking adventures, you'll discover the perfect blend of leisurely rides and exciting challenges. These routes will lead you to historic districts, riverside promenades, and panoramic viewpoints, ensuring a truly immersive and unique experience.

Cais Sodré-Belém:

If cycling by the sea on a pure cycle path is your thing, then this route is perfect for you. This 7 km long path starts downtown in the lively Cais do Sodré, and as you move away from it, you will find the Tagus River next to you, providing you with a refreshing breeze. Soon, we reach the historic district of Belem, a place where history comes alive. One important stop is the Belem Tower, a remarkable fortress that once guarded the entrance to the city's harbor. Its architectural beauty and strategic location make it a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Not too far from the tower, we come across the incredible Monument to the Discoveries, which pays homage to Portugal's epic maritime history, a time where Portugal was one of the biggest empires in the world. When you are done with the ride, you can’t miss a quick stop to try out the famous Pastéis de Belem, a traditional Portuguese custard tarts. All in all, this route is particularly recommended if you want to combine safety with visits to historical landmarks.

Belém-Trafaria:

This route is particularly unique given that it won’t include just cycling. After riding along the Tagus River, you will reach the Belem River station where you can take your bike to the ferry that goes to the other side of the river, Trafaria. When you arrive in Trafaria, you will find yourself in a traditional fishing village with a vast selection of restaurants where you can try out typical Portuguese food such as sardines. You can also skip the restaurants and use your bike to go to the beautiful Costa da Caparica beaches.

Before you conclude your journey, it is highly recommended to visit the Trafaria lighthouse. From its vantage point, you'll be treated to panoramic views of the coastline and the beautiful river. Take a moment to breathe in the salty sea air and soak up the beauty of the natural surroundings.

Cascais-Guincho:

This 7 km ride starts in Cascais, a famous coastal town known for its elegant charm and beautiful houses. This ride can be particularly inexpensive as the Cascais council provides basic bike rental for free. These bikes are called “Bicas” and their demand is much higher than the supply in the summer and you cannot reserve them so it is recommended you get them early in the day at around 8:30. You will also have to bring your own helmet.

The route takes us through the famous Cascais Marina, where you can catch glimpses of luxurious yachts and sailboats gently swaying in the harbor.  Leaving the marina behind, we follow the coastal road as it winds its way towards Guincho. Along the way, you'll be able to see mesmerizing views of rugged cliffs, golden sand dunes, and the breathtaking ocean.

As we approach Guincho, you will quickly see why it is one of the most famous beaches in Portugal. The huge waves are perfect for surfers, and the constant breeze is ideal for kitesurfing. Cycling to Guincho is the most practical way to get there, as there is only a limited bus service from Cascais and taxis can be expensive. Driving there could also be an option but in the summer it gets very difficult to find a parking spot.

Wear a helmet: Perhaps very obvious but often overlooked, wearing a helmet Is essential throughout your cycling journey. It's a simple yet effective measure to minimize the risk of head injuries in case of any unforeseen accidents.

Follow traffic rules: It’s very common for some bikers to think they don’t have to follow the same rules as other cars, but that shouldn’t be the case .Treat your bike as if it were a vehicle and respect the traffic rules and regulations. Observe traffic signals, yield to pedestrians, and use appropriate hand signals when turning or changing lanes.

Be visible: Increase your visibility to motorists and pedestrians by wearing brightly colored or reflective clothing. Consider attaching lights or reflectors to your bike, especially if you plan to ride during low-light conditions. Making yourself visible helps prevent collisions and ensures that others can see you on the road.

Plan your route:  Before setting off, plan your cycling route using a reliable map or navigation app. Choose routes with designated bike lanes or paths whenever possible. Familiarize yourself with the local traffic patterns and be mindful of any potential hazards along the way.

Stay alert and aware: Keep your focus on the road, paying attention to your surroundings and anticipating potential hazards. Watch out for parked cars, opening doors, pedestrians crossing the street, and other cyclists sharing the road. Being alert and proactive can help you react fast when an unexpected situation arises.

Lock your bike securely: It is not recommended you leave your bike unattended. When making stops or leaving your bike unattended (if necessary), invest in a strong lock to prevent theft. Look for designated bike parking areas and ensure your bike is securely fastened. Lock both the frame and wheels to a fixed object to prevent unauthorized movement.
